Talk 1: Development and Implementation of Signal Processing Techniques for Ground Clutter Mitigation and Noise Suppression on Polarimetric Doppler Weather Radar

Abstract:

With polarimetric radar, more accurate quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) and hydrometer classification products can be obtained, and more information can be provided for the recognition of precipitation microphysics. Though polarimetric radar data (PRD) have more variables, such as differential reflectivity (ZDR), propagation differential phase shift (ΦDP), and correlation coefficient (ρhv), the accuracy requirement of each moment is higher than the conventional radars. Among all the factors that adversely affect the quality of PRD, ground clutter and noise are the two major parts. In this study, methods for ground clutter identification and mitigation, noise estimation, and moments estimation are implemented or improved to meet the specific demand of polarimetric radars operated by China Meteorological Administration based on Nanjing University C-band polarimetric radar (NJU-CPOL) and X-band solid-state polarimetric radar (NJU-XPOL), which improve the quality of PRD significantly.

Biography:

Kun Zhao is from Nanjing University, current serve as the vice dean of School of Atmospheric Sciences. He is also the Director of the Joint Center for Atmospheric Radar Research sponsored by China Meteorological Administration, Beijing, China, and Nanjing University. He is the recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2020. His research interests include radar observation of severe convective storms and tropical cyclones, cloud and precipitation microphysics, radar data assimilation, and nowcasting.
