Talk 7: Development of Compact Airship-borne Polarimetric Weather Radar for Typhoon Observation

Speaker: Xichao Dong

Affiliation: Beijing Institute of Technology

Academic title: Associate Professor

Abstract:

The Airship-borne weather radar is installed on a stratosphere airship, offering advantages such as long dwell time in the space and the ability to closely monitor typhoons located far from the coast. We have designed a compact Ku-band polarimetric weather radar employing the ATAR mode as a compromise between payload capacity limitations and observation requirements. But the employment of ATAR mode and the Ku-band slotted phased array antenna will induce several problems in signal processing. In this study, we’ll give the new velocity de-aliasing method, along with a faidp correction and estimation algorithm, to ensure Doppler and polarimetric data quality. The methods have been validated through several ground observation campaigns. Further flight experiments are planned for the future.
