Title: Synthetic Aperture Radar Fundamentals and Advanced Technologies

Speaker: Prof. Andrea Buono

Time: 19: 30-22: 00, December 4, 2023

Place: Meeting Room 5

Abstract: The principle of synthetic aperture radar (SAR)  observation covers complex physical and signal processing processes, such as signal transmission, signal propagation, target scattering, signal receiving, signal sampling and storage, imaging processing, information extraction, etc. Before advancing SAR image applications, it is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding and learning of the basic working principles of SAR. At the beginning of the lecture, the workflow of SAR from data acquisition to imaging processing will be introduced comprehensively. Then, several advanced SAR technologies, like SAR Interferometry, SAR Polarimetry, Circular SAR, will be presented concisely. Afterwards, the computational challenges in SAR imaging and simulation will be discussed. With the continuous development of SAR technology, the working modes and application requirements of SAR are more flexible and ever-changing. The scale of SAR raw data is continuously increasing at the same time. HPC technologies such as heterogeneous parallel computing have played a significant role in SAR imaging and simulation, and the related applications will be introduced in the lecture. The final part of the lecture focuses on the theory of polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) and its marine applications. Today, the development of SAR systems has shifted to multi-polarization, providing more powerful tools for the advancement of satellite ocean technology. Some basics about radar polarimetry will be covered, and some ideas and trends regarding marine applications of PolSAR will be discussed in detail.
